Artists Away From Home Program

This innovative program partners with Remote Community Art Centres to Support First Nations Artists while they are in Broome. Artists and Art Centres are under a lot of different pressures when artists are away for periods of time, this project allows artists to continue their creative practice whilst remaining connected to their home Art Centres.

CIRCLE has developed a supportive studio environment for artists whilst they are in town by offering a painting program 3 days a week within Broome CIRCLE’s new facility BEC. Comprehensive MOU’s have been developed with each participating art centre, ensuring ethical, transparent best practice processes are in place from the very beginning of the project. Artists are supplied with Artist quality materials with the majority being hand primed on site.

Broome CIRCLE then arranges for finished works to be returned to the participating Art Centres. The works are then catalogued and sold directly from the Art Centres themselves, maintaining clear and consistent practice around Money Story, management of Copyright, pricing, marketing and resale royalty. This will ensure Art Centres are able to stay strong and continue to provide the many important services to the Artists.

Art Centres involved include Warlayirti Aritsts – Balgo, Mullan and Billiluna, Mangkaja Arts – Fitzroy Crossing,  Martumili Artists – Parnpajinya (Newman), Parnngurr, Jigalong, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Irungandji Warralong and Bidyadanga Artists – Bidyadanga.

Bidyadanga Photography Series and Exhibition Development

In 2021 Broome CIRCLE, Camera Story and the Bidyadanga Women’s Centre partnered together to deliver a series of Workshops and exhibition outcomes in Broome and Bidyadanga for First Nation Women. Out of this experience emerged a creatively driven group of Women that would like to continue their exploration of photography as a medium.

Through extensive reflection and consultation, a new series of workshops have been developed. Building upon what they learn in the previous workshops and how they would like to further their development both as individual practitioners and as a collective.

The workshops will cover a range of topics from technical aspects through to focused creative development. Allowing participants to become more comfortable with the equipment whilst providing a safe environment where they are able to explore their creativity, culture and identity through a camera lens.
